As a photographer, one of the things that you can guarantee is that you will be making more and more images. What happens when your images fill up your hard drive? If your answer was to choose a removable hard drive, what happens when this drive fills as well? RC Concepcion goes over how to setup a Network Attached Storage (NAS) system using a Synology NAS unit. At the end of this class, you will have a system with a great amount of storage, a good method of expanding this storage, and redundancy should one of the drives fails.
RC welcomes you to the start of the course.
In this lesson RC goes over what a network attached storage drive is and why it is important in your photographic workflow. This will give you a good foundation for why it is important to move everything to a central storage
There are several factors that you should keep in mind when selecting the right NAS Drive. RC goes over several options and give you his opinion on which want to begin with
A network attached storage device is only as good as the hard drive that you supplied them with. RC goes over the drive options he chooses when he wants to make sure that his date is safe
Once you have selected the hard drive it is easy to install into your Synology unit.
DSM is the operating system that is used for the network attach storage drive. In this lesson RC goes over how to install DSM into your existing unit.
Once DSM is installed you can take a quick tour of the drive and connect with using a web interface. You’ll also see the types of packages that can be installed on the Synology NAS
Once the distinction manager has been installed you will need to configure the hard drives for their first use. RC will go over how he uses the Synology hybrid RAID to set up his drives
Once the drives have been configured, you will need to create a main area for the images to be stored. RC will go over creating a new shared folder for the images to reside in.
As the drive is complete, its recommended that you make sure that you can access the Synology drive from a PC or a Mac. Take a quick of the DSM control panel to make sure you have key steps checked, and specific access turned off.
In this lesson, RC goes over how to connect to the server through the Mac operating system. To show how this works RC will move a folder of images onto the NAS device
When you have a lot of images that you need to move on to your attached storage device, it is a much better idea for you to use the external ports on the NAS. RC goes over how to quickly attach the USB drive and transfer the images seamlessly .
Once you are outside of your network at home you will need to connect to your drive. This Synology quick connect service allows you to access your NAS drive on the go.
Your drive is set and you are ready to import images!
